Existing Media Texts - Magazine Cover One

Television magazines have two main motives, one - to make the reader buy the magazine and two, in turn, making the reader then watch the soap opera. The six different sections are separated into their own segments by a simple white line which contrasts against the blue background making it easy for the reader to locate the information they want quicker.

The images within four of the sections, including the main image, are staged photographs and whilst the people remain in character no hint is given as to relationships or storylines, this means that the reader must buy the magazine to gain this information. The perspectives used within the images however, allow the reader the knowledge as to whom the more central characters are. The images that are not staged are screen grabs from prior filming these may be used as they are part of an on-going storyline or event to which the audience already have knowledge about. The main background is a light blue colour which has connotations of relaxation a parallel to what some people watch soap operas for; to relax and escape. The soap magazine is aimed towards a Soap Opera watcher as four segments are about soaps and the main coverline does not tell the audience which soap it is from, instead naming one of the main forums "The Vic". The main coverline uses the colour yellow and black, which combined together have connotations of danger which is parallel to the storyline being advertised. The words hot and the coverline about England playing football are written in a red font, this is because red has connotations of warmth is and indexical reference associated with the English flag.

The mast head is separated from the rest of the front cover in a square red puff, the isolation from the other segments of the magazine make it obvious as the title. This particular magazine cover uses one main colour theme that links to the storylines via the use of pink within the section promoting "love shocks". The colour pink is used as it has connotations of love, relationships and happiness, all themes current within this section; by the use of this colour scheme the reader is more aware of the theme of love parallel across three soap operas and their excitement builds as they want to read the magazine to find out more. Television magazines differ to other magazines as they are not stylistically modern and instead their main focus is catching the reader’s attention via the use of bright colours and the use of coverlines that promote the soap operas and cause the reader to buy the magazine by creating mystery and suspense, this is something key to remember when developing our own.
